Football Set to Introduce Blue Card

Published:

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) has approved sin-bin trials, with an official announcement expected on Friday.

The introduction of the blue card marks the first addition to football’s card system since the 1970 FIFA World Cup, where yellow and red cards were implemented.

Under the new protocols, players receiving two blue cards will face automatic expulsion, similar to the consequences of accumulating two yellow cards.

Initially, the sin-bin trials will apply to matches outside of top-tier competitions, focusing on fouls impeding promising attacks and instances of dissent.

The trial excludes elite football competitions initially, allowing room for potential adjustments before wider implementation.

While top-flight leagues are excluded from the initial phase, the Football Association (FA) is considering introducing the blue card trial in the FA Cup and Women’s FA Cup next season.
