Ghanaian Man Sues Ex-Girlfriend for Allegedly Refusing Marriage After Financing Education

A young Ghanaian man known as Otu has taken legal action against his ex-girlfriend, Mercy Agyei, accusing her of refusing marriage despite his sponsorship of her university education. The story began six years ago in Kumasi, where Otu proposed to Mercy and took on the responsibility of financing her academic pursuits.

Otu claims that he not only sponsored Mercy’s university education but also started a business for her mother and fulfilled various financial commitments throughout their relationship. Following the advice of Mercy’s mother, Otu relocated her to Tema, where he continued to provide financial support for her education, including her Higher National Diploma program and subsequent degree.

The unexpected twist occurred when Mercy, after securing a job at a bank, decided to end their relationship. Feeling betrayed by the significant investments he made, Otu has filed a lawsuit in the Kumasi Circuit Court, seeking compensation of GH¢350,000 (approximately N26 million).

The lawsuit alleges that Otu’s financial contributions were made under the expectation that the relationship would lead to marriage. The legal proceedings are pending, with court sessions scheduled for February 20, allowing both parties to present their cases.
