How ECG Will Tackle Free Electricity Consumption

Published:

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has initiated “Operation No Free Consumption” to address the issue of widespread free electricity consumption in the country. The operation, slated to be effective from February 1st to February 15th, 2024, aims to curtail unauthorized usage and ensure fair payment for electricity services.

In an official notice, the ECG communicated its intention to all customers and electricity users who have been consuming electricity without making corresponding payments. As part of the operation, ECG personnel will conduct comprehensive updates of customer details, including phone numbers, GPS addresses, and other relevant information.

One of the key elements of the operation involves the collection of any outstanding arrears and disconnection for non-payment of these arrears. ECG officers will be equipped with the latest meter reading electronic device, known as the Zeus Mobile device, to capture pictorial readings of all postpaid meters. Additionally, the operation aims to capture and regularize all Self-Help Electrification Project (SHEP) and non-ECG meters on the Zeus mobile device, enabling customers to pay the required regularization fee.

To ensure the smooth execution of the operation, the regional and district offices of ECG will operate with a lean staff pool. However, essential services will still be provided to customers during this exercise.

The move comes as part of ECG’s broader efforts to streamline its operations, improve revenue collection, and address the issue of unpaid electricity consumption, which has been a significant concern in the country.
