Lawyer Alhassan Sulemana Tampuli, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Gushegu constituency in the Northern Region, has garnered overwhelming support as the parliamentary candidate for the party in the upcoming 2024 general elections.
The Deputy Minister of Transport achieved this endorsement through a widely supported acclamation held on Sunday, January 21, 2024. The Gushegu Municipal Director of the Electoral Commission (EC) declared him as the elected 2024 parliamentary candidate for the NPP, given that he was the sole aspirant who declared his intention to run for the primaries during the nomination period.
Mr. Lucas Yiryil, the EC Northern Regional Director, present at the event, clarified that the acclamation was conducted in accordance with Constitutional Instrument (C.I 127). According to C.I 127, if only one candidate stands nominated at the close of nominations, that person should be declared elected unopposed. Mr. Yiryil explained that the nomination process was managed by the NPP, and the commission was informed that only one candidate in the Gushegu constituency filed to contest at the close of nominations.
Expressing his gratitude, Mr. Tampuli thanked the NPP delegates for entrusting him with the mandate to lead the party again. He highlighted the growth and development witnessed in the Gushegu constituency during his tenure, emphasizing his commitment to doubling his efforts in the next term.
Addressing his critics, Mr. Tampuli asserted that his track record in infrastructure growth and human resource development in the constituency stands as evidence of his leadership capabilities. He pledged to enhance the socioeconomic livelihood of his constituents by adding more communities to the national electricity grid, constructing boreholes, dams, health facilities, school blocks, and improving the road network.
In a bold statement, he dismissed the opposition NDC’s chances in the Gushegu constituency, asserting that the alternative they present is not promising. Mr. Tampuli promised to focus on delivering tangible results to the people, aiming to secure victory for the NPP.
Meanwhile, in the Bimbilla constituency, Hon Dominic Nitiwul expressed confidence in retaining the seat for the NPP. He urged party executives to work diligently for success in the upcoming elections and called for unity within the party.
The NPP has also maintained several other candidates, including Habib Iddrisu for Tolon, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam for Karaga, and Thomas Mbomba for Tatale Sanguli constituency.
