Mahama Opposes EC’s Plan to Use Ghana Card for Voter Registration

Published:

Former President Mahama has voiced opposition to the Electoral Commission’s (EC) proposal to use the Ghana Card as the sole identification document for voter registration. Speaking to supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Volta Region, Mahama expressed concern over the EC’s insistence on this measure.

While the EC aims to enhance the credibility of the voter register and promote inclusivity through continuous registration, Mahama highlighted the potential drawbacks of relying solely on the Ghana Card for identification. He emphasized the need for alternative forms of identification to ensure that all eligible voters, especially those without the Ghana Card, are not disenfranchised.

Despite Mahama’s opposition, the EC remains steadfast in its decision to proceed with the proposed changes to the voter registration process.

Jean Mensa, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), has announced plans to eliminate the guarantor system for the continuous voter registration exercise in Ghana. She reassured the public that this move, outlined in a proposed Constitutional Instrument (CI), aims to enhance the credibility of the voter register and instill confidence in the electoral process.

Contrary to concerns raised by the Minority in Parliament, Jean Mensa emphasized that the proposed CI will promote inclusivity by ensuring that all eligible voters are registered. By transitioning to a continuous registration process, the EC aims to capture individuals who might have been excluded during limited registration exercises.

One key aspect of the proposed CI is the adoption of the Ghana Card as the sole identification document for voter registration. According to Jean Mensa, this measure will prevent non-citizens and minors from being listed on the voter register, thereby enhancing its integrity.
