Why Stonebwoy songs have been removed from Tiktok

Published:

Starting from January 31, 2024, content creators and Stonebwoy fans may encounter limitations on TikTok as songs under the Universal Music Group (UMG) label will no longer be available for use.

Existing videos featuring UMG’s music are subject to being muted or removed. This decision stems from the failure of the two companies to renegotiate a deal regarding compensation for the use of UMG’s music on TikTok.

The primary issues leading to the withdrawal of UMG’s song catalog from TikTok revolve around:

1. Appropriate Compensation for Artists and Songwriters: UMG claims that TikTok is not paying a fair value for its music, potentially hindering the proper compensation of artists and songwriters.

2. Protecting Artists from AI’s Harmful Effects: UMG is concerned about safeguarding human artists from the potential negative impacts of artificial intelligence (AI).

3. Online Safety for TikTok’s Users:UMG emphasizes the importance of ensuring online safety for TikTok’s user base.

According to DTS Africa, UMG accuses TikTok of attempting to build a music-based business without adequately compensating artists and songwriters. UMG further alleges that TikTok is using bullying tactics to force an unfavorable deal and disregarding copyright agreements. UMG claims that TikTok represents only about 1% of its total revenue, indicating a significant disparity between TikTok’s payments for music.

In response, TikTok denies UMG’s allegations, expressing disappointment that UMG prioritizes its own financial interests over those of its artists and songwriters. TikTok asserts that it has successfully negotiated artist-first agreements with other labels and publishers, emphasizing that UMG’s actions are not in the best interests of artists, songwriters, and fans.

TikTok defends itself by highlighting its role as a free promotional and discovery platform for UMG’s talent, boasting a billion users who actively support music.
