Ghana is preparing to introduce an airport development fee aimed at financing significant upgrades across the country’s air transport network. Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson revealed during the 2026 Budget presentation that proceeds from the fee will be allocated to several major projects, including the renovation of Sunyani Airport and the construction of a brand-new airport in Bolgatanga.
The fee will also support key improvements at Kotoka International Airport, such as a multi-purpose parking facility and a connecting concourse between Terminals 2 and 3. These measures are part of the government’s broader plan to modernize Ghana’s airports and improve the overall travel experience for passengers.
Sunyani Airport, situated in the Bono Region, has been operational since the 1940s but has gradually fallen behind in infrastructure and amenities, causing occasional closures. The planned rehabilitation aims to bring the airport up to modern safety standards while boosting domestic air travel and stimulating economic growth in the region.
With the new airport in Bolgatanga and upgrades to existing facilities, the government is positioning Ghana to better handle rising passenger traffic and foster regional connectivity, while ensuring that travelers benefit from safer, more efficient, and more convenient airport services.
