Cynthia Achieng Abok has endured more in love than most people can imagine—twelve marriages that ended in heartbreak, betrayal, and emotional scars. But despite the pain, her story is one of resilience and undying hope.
Originally from Kisumu and now living in Nairobi, the 37-year-old woman opened up about her tumultuous journey through multiple relationships, each shaped by a troubled childhood and the desperate search for stability. Growing up without a solid family structure, she was thrust into adulthood far too early.
Her early years were marred by separation between her parents. After her mother remarried, Cynthia struggled to find a place of peace—caught between two households and abandoned by her siblings who had already left home. With no safety net and a longing for affection, she gravitated towards older men who promised love and support, only to end up using and discarding her.
Many of these men, she revealed, were already married. They would set her up in hidden apartments, pledging to fund her education and take care of her, but those promises evaporated quickly. Instead of security, she found isolation, neglect, and often emotional or physical abuse.
One particularly distressing relationship involved a much older religious leader—77 years old—who fathered one of her children. He, too, concealed her from his official family and failed to honour any commitments. What began with a promise of stability ended with humiliation and abandonment once his wife discovered the affair and forced Cynthia out.
Now a mother of three, she’s had to navigate life through hardship, relying on odd jobs to provide for her children while dealing with personal battles that included mental strain and harmful coping habits. Yet, amid all the chaos and trauma, Cynthia has not given up on the idea of love.
While she admits she’s not ready for another relationship just yet, she holds on to the possibility that the right person might still come her way. Despite years of pain, her belief in healing and hope remains unshaken.
