Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, has issued a call to Africans in the diaspora to translate their influence in global industries into actual ownership of businesses and institutions. Speaking at the 2025 GUBA Awards and Dinner in Bridgetown, Barbados, he highlighted the gap between the success of diaspora individuals in creative and sports industries and the ownership of the companies behind them.

The King noted that while Africans abroad have made significant marks in music, dance, jazz, reggae, and other fields, most of the entities profiting from these successes are not diaspora-owned. He stressed that acknowledging this reality is the first step toward changing it and reclaiming ownership.

The event attracted high-profile attendees, including the President of Barbados, Sandra Mason, and the Prime Minister of Grenada, Dickon Mitchell. Founded in 2010 by British-Ghanaian entrepreneur Dentaa, the GUBA Awards celebrate achievements by Ghanaians and friends of Ghana abroad, providing a platform to inspire younger generations through the recognition of influential role models.
