Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has announced his departure from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to dedicate more time to humanitarian efforts.
In a recent statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), Gyan revealed that he has decided to step away from active politics to focus on empowering Ghana’s youth through his charitable organisation, the Asamoah Gyan Foundation.
Gyan, who is Ghana’s all-time top goalscorer, previously made headlines in February 2024 when he attended the campaign launch of NPP’s presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Shortly after, he was appointed chairman of Bawumia’s Youth and Sports Manifesto sub-committee and participated in a campaign event with the vice president in Akropong.
Despite these engagements, Gyan has expressed regret over his involvement with the political party, stating that it has not aligned with his commitment to supporting the youth.
He emphasised that his future efforts will be solely focused on humanitarian activities, without any political affiliations.
Gyan concluded his statement by wishing all political parties a peaceful election and reaffirming his dedication to contributing positively to Ghana’s development.
These were his words:
“I HAVEN’T BEEN FAIR TO THE YOUTH AND THE PEOPLE OF GHANA. HENCE FORTH I AM NOT AFFILIATED TO ANY POLITICAL PARTY, I WILL CONTINUE WITH MY HUMANITARIAN WORK AND HELP THE YOUTH OF GHANA IN MY OWN SMALL WAY. NOTHING POLITICAL, I WISH ALL THE POLITICAL PARTIES A PEACEFUL ELECTION ON THE 7TH DECEMBER, GOD BLESS OUR HOMELAND GHANA, THANK YOU.”
