The Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council (GARCC) has stepped in to address recent rumours suggesting traders at Nkrumah Circle were facing eviction. Officials clarified that the initiative is not about displacing traders, but about upgrading trading environments and tackling sanitation challenges in the capital.
Tony Addison Dodoo, Chief Coordinator of the Keep Greater Accra Clean Project, emphasised that the goal is to build modern, organised trading areas while improving waste disposal practices. He explained that the project is a collaborative effort involving traders, local authorities, and potential investors interested in developing contemporary shopping facilities in the area.
In response to protests by Circle traders alleging forced takeovers of their shops and claims that land was sold to a foreign investor, GARCC reaffirmed that all planning is being conducted with stakeholder input. Dodoo urged traders to engage constructively with the initiative, highlighting that the focus is on modernising markets, not evicting occupants.
He added that the project aims to create orderly, hygienic spaces capable of supporting all traders while improving overall waste management across the city. Traders were encouraged to see the initiative as an opportunity for a modernised, sustainable marketplace rather than a threat to their livelihoods.
