Ghanaian sports journalist Jeffrey Amoah has sharply criticized former football star Asamoah Gyan for allegedly tarnishing his reputation by engaging in politics.
In his commentary, Jeffrey Amoah argued that during election seasons, political parties often seek to enlist celebrities for their campaigns.
He warned that without careful consideration, such endorsements could harm a celebrity’s public image and legacy.
Amoah specifically pointed to Asamoah Gyan, who, according to him, has compromised his once-stellar reputation by associating himself with the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Amoah highlighted that the current political climate shows the opposition party as having a stronger chance of winning the upcoming election.
This has led to increased efforts by political parties to attract prominent figures to support their causes.
He noted that Gyan’s recent involvement with the NPP has negatively impacted his legacy, especially following discrepancies in a recent statement issued by the footballer.
Last week, Asamoah Gyan released a statement distancing himself from any political party after having previously endorsed the NPP and its leader, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
The statement did not clarify the reasons behind his sudden change of stance.
However, it later emerged that Gyan’s disassociation was reportedly linked to a financial dispute involving the NPP, with video evidence surfacing online showing that money intended for him was misappropriated.
The incident has sparked significant discussion, with critics arguing that Gyan’s political involvement has led to a public relations fiasco, overshadowing his achievements on the football field.
“The data and statistics online show that the opposition party has a higher chance of winning this upcoming election. This has caused some tension so political parties are trying every means to lure celebrities and public figures to their side to campaign for them. So if any celebrity allows himself to be used, he or she will have regrets like Asamoah Gyan. His legacy has dropped and stained because there were some discrepancies in the letter he released recently.”
