Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, has highlighted the critical role of the African diaspora in reducing the continent’s reliance on Western powers. Speaking at the 2025 GUBA Awards and Dinner in Bridgetown, Barbados, he emphasized that Africa and the Caribbean share a deep, historic connection that can be leveraged for economic, social, and political impact.
The monarch stressed that collaboration with the diaspora offers Africa an opportunity to shift its global narrative from dependence to one of partnership, strength, and sustainable development. He urged renewed efforts to connect and strengthen ties, emphasizing that collective action can lead to shared prosperity.
The event brought together notable dignitaries, including the President of Barbados, Sandra Mason, and the Prime Minister of Grenada, Dickon Mitchell. The GUBA Awards, founded in 2010 by British-Ghanaian entrepreneur Dentaa, serve as a platform to recognize and celebrate the achievements of Ghanaians and friends of Ghana abroad. The awards also aim to inspire younger generations by showcasing outstanding role models within the diaspora.
