A tragic incident has struck the Bogoso-Prestea Mine in Ghana’s Western Region, where several suspected illegal miners reportedly died after being overcome by carbon monoxide underground. The miners are believed to have suffocated following a mysterious smoke, possibly triggered by an underground blast.

The incident occurred around levels 8 and 9 of the mine, now operated by Heath Goldfields, though the exact number of casualties remains unclear. Some sources suggest up to 30 miners may have perished, while others report 11 confirmed bodies recovered earlier. By Tuesday evening, November 18, 2025, three additional bodies were retrieved from level 9.

Authorities have not issued an official statement, but the matter has been reported to the Prestea Police, who are currently investigating. The mine’s management has recently been taken over by Heath Goldfields, a transition currently challenged in court by previous leaseholders, Blue Gold.
