Bukom Banku ditches NDC for New Force
Ghanaian boxing icon Braimah Kamoko, popularly known as Bukom Banku, has defected from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to the New Force party, led by Nana Kwame Bediako, also known as Cheddar.
Addressing a gathering in Chorkor, Accra, Bukom Banku enthusiastically endorsed Cheddar’s candidacy, urging his supporters to follow suit. He attributed his decision to his close friendship with Cheddar, appealing to his followers to trust his judgment and rally behind the New Force.
However, he also acknowledged the freedom of individuals to vote for their preferred candidates. This unexpected move has sent shockwaves across Ghana, given Bukom Banku’s long-standing loyalty to the NDC and its flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama.
Known for his fervent support, Bukom Banku had previously hailed Mahama as a political mentor, actively campaigning for him in past elections. His sudden switch to the New Force has sparked speculation about the motivations behind his change of heart, with many wondering if financial gains played a role.
Last year 2023, Bukom Banku, the former WBO Africa light heavyweight champion, called on Dr. Kwabena Duffuor and Kojo Bonsu to step aside and allow former President John Mahama to run unopposed in the flagbearership race.
He believed that Mahama’s experience as a former head of state and his higher chances of winning the 2024 elections make him the best candidate for the party.
According to Bukom Banku, the party’s unity and support for Mahama are crucial for their success in the upcoming elections. By withdrawing from the race, Duffuor and Bonsu can help the party present a united front and increase their chances of victory.
