How a Nigerian Man Almost Lost Cash to WhatsApp Scam – A Close Call

Published:

A Nigerian man has shared a chilling experience of nearly falling victim to a WhatsApp scam that could have cost him ₦135,000.

The incident began when he received an urgent request via WhatsApp from his neighbor, asking him to send the money to an account because the neighbor couldn’t access his own.

While the man was busy, he handed his phone to his wife to process the transfer. However, something made him second-guess the request.

He decided to call his neighbor directly through WhatsApp to verify the urgent need. After several unsuccessful attempts to reach him, the man became even more suspicious and tried calling his neighbor via a regular phone call, but again, there was no response.

It was only after a while that his neighbor called back, panicked, and informed him that his WhatsApp had been hacked.

The scammer had been using it to defraud contacts. Unfortunately, another neighbor had already fallen victim and sent the ₦135,000 to the fraudsters before realizing the scam.

Reflecting on the close call, the man shared his thoughts online, admitting that if he had sent the money without verifying the request, he could have walked straight into a financial trap.
