Rev. Dr. Lawrence Tetteh, President of the Worldwide Miracle Outreach (WMO), has issued a strong rebuke to the leadership of the religious community for their silence on the controversial anti-gay bill currently under discussion.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra on May 10, Dr. Tetteh expressed his dismay at what he described as the “cowardice” of religious leaders who have failed to voice their positions on the issue.
During the event, which was part of his 31-day National Prayer Rally themed “This Nonsense Must Stop,” Dr. Tetteh did not mince words in his criticism.
He further announced his intention to march to the Jubilee House to remind politicians of their accountability to the voters who put them in power.
Dr. Tetteh emphasized the need for religious leaders to speak out against issues they believe are morally wrong, criticizing their preoccupation with titles and status over taking a stand on important social matters.
An economist and a clergyman, Dr. Tetteh’s remarks have sparked a conversation about the role of religious leaders in political and social issues.
His call for action and vocal stance contrasts sharply with the apparent reluctance of other religious figures to engage in the debate over the anti-gay bill, highlighting a divide within the community regarding involvement in political matters.
On February 24, 2024, Parliament approved the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Act. This act criminalizes LGBTQ+ activities as well as the promotion, advocacy, and funding of such activities. However, it has yet to be signed into law by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
