The Interior Minister, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, says recent investigations have confirmed that firearms played a major role in the violence recorded during both the 2020 and 2024 general elections. According to the ministry’s findings, the incidents mainly arose from clashes involving supporters of the two dominant political parties, along with situations where security personnel fired live rounds while trying to disperse agitated crowds.
The minister shared the latest review on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, noting that almost every violent episode examined involved gunfire. He mentioned that a key aspect of the inquiries focused on the Odododiodio constituency disturbances during the 2020 election. That case has now moved to the courts, with three accused persons standing trial at the Criminal High Court in Accra.
The review also concluded that four deaths across three separate incidents were caused by armed police patrol teams during attempts to restore order. In addition, military intervention in three other chaotic scenes resulted in three more fatalities.
Muntaka stressed that government is determined to ensure accountability in every election-related death and is taking steps to improve coordination among security institutions to reduce the risk of similar tragedies in future electoral exercises.
