Ghanaian journalist Johnnie Hughes, currently vacationing in London, has taken a swipe at the government over the controversial $43 million allocated for desilting the Odaw River in Accra.
Known for his outspoken stance on national issues, Hughes shared a photo from London’s Royal Victoria Dock, contrasting its pristine condition with the persistent drainage problems in Accra.
His social media post carried a sarcastic caption, implying that the massive investment in the Odaw River project had not yielded any meaningful results.
The $43 million was part of a World Bank initiative aimed at reducing flooding in Accra through improved drainage and waste management.
However, concerns have been raised about whether the funds were properly utilized. Former President John Dramani Mahama has also criticized the handling of the project, alleging that both the $43 million and an additional $150 million under the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) project were mismanaged.
Government representatives have dismissed these claims, with an aide to the former Minister of Sanitation, Cecilia Dapaah, stating that the funds remained under the ministry’s control. According to him, as of the minister’s departure, the procurement process to hire consultants for the project was still in progress.
