Tensions are rising over a developing controversy at Kessben FM, where radio presenter Kwame Appiah Kubi has been suspended from his duties following his participation in a peaceful demonstration against illegal mining—commonly referred to as galamsey.
The protest, which took place at Ghana’s Jubilee House in Accra, was led by broadcaster and anti-galamsey campaigner Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah. The demonstration aimed to draw national attention to the environmental destruction caused by galamsey, particularly the pollution of water bodies and the loss of fertile lands.
According to Afrifa-Mensah, the reason behind Appiah Kubi’s suspension stems from external political pressure.
He claims that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) reached out to Kessben FM and demanded disciplinary action against the journalist for his involvement in the protest.
This allegation was made public during an appearance on Good Evening Ghana on Metro TV on April 29, 2025.
The protest is part of a broader campaign by Afrifa-Mensah, who has taken bold steps in confronting illegal mining. In addition to publishing names and phone numbers of alleged galamsey operators, he has been actively involved in field operations.
In one such incident, he and Appiah Kubi reportedly apprehended three Chinese nationals engaged in galamsey activities along the Tano River in the Western Region. The suspects were handed over to the police for further investigation.
The suspension has triggered widespread public debate, with many questioning the implications for press freedom in Ghana.
Concerns are growing over whether journalists are being silenced for standing up for environmental protection and the national interest.
Activists and concerned citizens are now rallying behind the duo, urging Ghanaians to support efforts to combat galamsey.
They stress that unity is essential in the fight to safeguard Ghana’s natural resources for future generations.
