A Nigerian woman has sparked widespread outrage after revealing that her landlord refunded her full rent and asked her to vacate the apartment—simply because she is a single woman and a Christian.
The woman, who uses the handle @Ajokeaadee on X (formerly Twitter), shared the disturbing experience in a post that quickly went viral. She explained that the landlord, who had recently taken over ownership of the building, was upset to learn that a single Christian woman—particularly one belonging to a white garment church—had been given a tenancy by the caretaker without her knowledge or approval.
In her words, the landlord made it clear she didn’t want any unmarried women or Christians residing in the property, prompting her to return the rent and demand the woman leave.
Expressing disbelief, the woman noted that discriminatory practices in Lagos’s housing market appear to be growing. “Some Lagos landlords are not renting out their property to you if you’re single?? Oh wow!” she wrote, heartbroken by the unexpected rejection.
Her experience resonated with many Nigerians who took to the comments to share similar stories of being denied housing based on marital status, tribe, or religion.
Some claimed they were rejected for being single women, while others said landlords turned them away for being Igbo or Yoruba, showing how bias continues to affect tenants unfairly.
The incident has sparked a conversation on social media about the need for legal protections and reforms to address housing discrimination in Nigeria, especially in major cities like Lagos where accommodation is already a significant challenge.
