Lawyer Advises Men on How to Protect Property During Divorce

A Nigerian lawyer, Samuel Gift Onyinye Ola, has stirred controversy online after offering men advice on how to legally protect their property in the event of a divorce.

In a Facebook post shared on April 23, 2025, Onyinye boldly stated that any man who loses his property to his wife during a divorce is “not smart.”

Onyinye’s advice centers on the use of irrevocable trusts and registering assets in children’s names. She explained that by doing this, men could shield their wealth from being divided during a divorce.

According to Onyinye, registering property in the name of children effectively removes it from being considered marital property.

She further clarified that the timing of establishing such trusts is crucial. If the trust is set up before the marriage, it is more likely to be regarded as separate property in a divorce.

However, if the trust is created during the marriage, it could be seen as part of the property to be divided, especially if the divorce proceedings are already underway.

Her comments have sparked a wide range of reactions online, with some applauding the practical advice, while others have criticized it as promoting selfishness and distrust in marriages.
