Leaders of Democracy Hub protest are not fit for the role - Nana Romeo
Ghanaian radio presenter Nana Romeo has openly criticised the recent #StopGalamsey protest, describing it as a “waste of time.”
During a segment on UTV’s United Showbiz monitored by News & Vibes, he expressed disappointment with the protesters’ approach, particularly their disregard for police directives.
Nana Romeo recounted how the organisers had informed the police of their intentions to demonstrate and outlined specific routes they wished to take.
However, the police deemed those routes unsuitable and proposed approved alternatives.
On the day of the protest, the demonstrators chose to ignore these recommendations and proceeded with their original plans, which Romeo labelled as an act of defiance against lawful authority.
He remarked on the irony of the situation, questioning how citizens who recognise the nation’s challenges and claim to seek order can so easily disregard police instructions.
He argued that this behaviour reflects a lack of discipline and questioned the belief that a specific route or location is essential for the success of a protest.
He emphasised that the primary goal of a protest should be to make one’s voice heard, rather than focusing on the physical space occupied.
Drawing parallels to significant historical protests, such as those led by Rosa Parks and Mahatma Gandhi, as well as the demonstrations following George Floyd’s death, Nana Romeo highlighted how these movements achieved meaningful change without resorting to unlawful actions.
He concluded that while protests can indeed lead to results, failing to adhere to the law undermines their objectives.
In his view, the leaders of the #StopGalamsey protest were unfit for the role, and the entire endeavour was ultimately futile and unlikely to produce any meaningful outcomes.
“You went to the police and informed them about your intention to demonstrate. You even had specific routes you wanted to take, but the police deemed those routes inappropriate and provided approved alternatives. However, on the day of the protest, you insisted on taking the unapproved routes.”
“As citizens who recognize that things aren’t going well in the country and who claim to want order restored, how can you disregard the police’s directives? It shows a lack of discipline. Who says there’s a specific path or location that guarantees the success of a protest? It’s about making your voice heard, not about where you stand.”
“Protests can bring results, but if you don’t follow the law, what are you really trying to achieve?”
“The leaders of this protest are not fit for the role. The entire exercise was a waste of time and energy and will not yield any results.”
