A Nigerian man has shared a disturbing experience that unfolded one night after church — an encounter with law enforcement that, according to him, felt more like an abduction than a police stop.
The incident occurred at about 8 p.m. along TV Road in Benin City, opposite Baptist High School. According to his detailed account posted on TikTok, a group of plainclothes officers lying in wait in a dark spot suddenly ordered him to turn off his headlights and unlock his boot.
Thinking it was a standard check, he complied. But the situation took a terrifying turn when one of the officers — sitting inside a parked Sienna — began shouting accusations, claiming the man was a cultist. The officers demanded access to his phone in order to “identify” him.
Despite showing proof of ownership for his car, he refused to hand over his phone. That refusal, he said, was met with aggression. He was handcuffed, thrown into their vehicle, and held against his will for nearly an hour without being told what law he had broken.
He said he wasn’t allowed to make a phone call. Instead, they claimed he was on a suspicious mission in the city, based on so-called “intel.” His only crime, he said, was being alone in a car after church.
His TikTok videos have since gone viral, drawing a wave of sympathy — and concern — from others who say the area is notorious for such police behavior. Many commenters recounted their own brushes with officers using the same tactics at night, warning others to avoid the route entirely after dark.
Several said they too had been forced to switch off headlights, submit to phone checks, or pay bribes. The man’s emotional video sparked a broader conversation about unchecked policing and what some described as routine harassment.
Though he escaped without physical harm, the man said the emotional damage lingers — and he now questions whether he encountered law enforcement that night or something much darker.
