Former Ghanaian Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu has issued a detailed critique of his successor, William Kissi Agyebeng, highlighting concerns about the integrity, competence, and professionalism of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP). The critique focuses on recent public statements made by Agyebeng concerning investigations into Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML) and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) contracts.

Amidu noted discrepancies between Agyebeng’s remarks and the OSP’s official reports, particularly regarding the investigation of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta. He emphasized that prior OSP reports made no indication of Ofori-Atta being a suspect or of non-cooperation from other state agencies, contrasting sharply with claims made by Agyebeng on television about government interference.

Beyond the SML and GRA investigations, Amidu expressed concerns about Agyebeng’s handling of the Airbus SE investigation and the ongoing extradition matters involving Ofori-Atta. He described these issues as evidence of poor leadership and argued that political maneuvering within the OSP threatens the rule of law.

Amidu has called on President John Dramani Mahama to commission an independent forensic audit of the OSP, focusing on recruitment practices, expenditures, and operational outcomes. The former prosecutor warned that politicization of law enforcement could undermine public confidence and hinder Ghana’s efforts to hold officials accountable.
