Former U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama has offered fresh advice on what people should prioritize when choosing a life partner — and it’s all about teamwork, flexibility, and shared responsibilities.
Speaking on relationships, Michelle compared choosing a spouse to drafting players for a sports team. Using basketball as an example, she said it makes more sense to pick someone who can play multiple roles rather than someone who excels at just one thing. In the same way, she explained, a partner in marriage should be capable of handling various tasks.
She stressed the importance of choosing someone who doesn’t just bring one strength to the relationship but is willing and able to step up in different areas — especially when life throws challenges their way.
Michelle highlighted common domestic responsibilities, like cooking and managing finances, saying it’s risky to leave certain tasks entirely to one person. In her view, true partnership means both individuals can take charge when needed, especially during unexpected situations.
According to her, choosing a partner who only brings limited support could create problems later in life. She encouraged people to look for someone who isn’t just willing to share duties but is fully prepared to carry the weight when their partner can’t.
In a message caption accompanying her comments, Michelle summed it all up by saying people should find someone who’s not just a teammate, but a reliable backup for life’s unpredictable moments.
“Everybody has to be able to do it all,”
“Each person in a couple has to be able and willing to do it all.”
“You don’t want to marry a man who is like ‘I don’t cook’. It’s like, well, what happens if I can’t cook?”
“Or if you’re the woman and you can’t balance the checkbook because you’ve left that to him. Life is too complicated for two partners not to be real equals in it.”
“Find a partner who isnt just willing to divide and conquer, but who’s capable of covering for you during life’s unpredictable moments.”
