Tensions flared in Parliament on November 13, 2025, as Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga accused Minority Chief Whip Alexander Afenyo-Markin of repeatedly disrupting proceedings and disrespecting the House. The confrontation followed the presentation of the 2026 Budget, with Ayariga claiming that the Minority caucus had engaged in indiscipline and defied parliamentary rules.
Citing Standing Order 126, Ayariga asserted that Afenyo-Markin’s actions not only undermined the Speaker but also disrespected Ghanaians. He demanded an immediate, unqualified apology, warning that failure to comply would compel him to raise a question of contempt and breach of privilege.
Ayariga stressed that the Majority would not stand by while parliamentary proceedings were obstructed. He urged Speaker Alban Bagbin to refer Afenyo-Markin to the Privileges Committee for repeated misconduct. Describing the Minority Leader as “too small to disrespect this House,” the Majority Leader underscored the seriousness of maintaining decorum and protecting the dignity of Parliament.
