Kofi Adoma’s GoFundMe Raises Eyebrows as Ibrahim Mahama Offers Full Medical Support
Debate is intensifying over a €50,000 GoFundMe campaign launched for Ghanaian media personality Kofi Adoma Nwawani after he suffered a severe eye injury while covering the Kwafie festival and the 25th anniversary of the enstoolment of Dormaahene, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II, in Dormaa Ahenkro
. The injury occurred when a musketeer discharged a firearm at close range, causing partial blindness. Adoma is currently receiving treatment in Dubai.
The fundraiser, organised by Oppong Kofi, a Ghanaian based in Brescia, Italy, aims to raise €50,000, with nearly €5,000 secured so far.
However, the campaign has stirred controversy after reports emerged that Ghanaian businessman Ibrahim Mahama had pledged to cover all of Adoma’s medical expenses through his Foundation.
Adding to the growing conversation, Nana Yaa Brefo, a media personality and former colleague of Adoma at Angel Broadcasting Network (ABN), publicly called on Dr Kwaku Oteng, her former boss, to support Adoma.
Brefo pointed out that the fundraising target should not be an issue for Oteng, given his financial capacity. She also urged the Dormaahene to assist, highlighting that Adoma sustained the injury while covering an event related to him.
Social media users have echoed Brefo’s sentiments, questioning the purpose of the fundraiser when Mahama’s financial support was already pledged. One user asked, “So what happened to Ibrahim Mahama’s money?” while another commented, “They wanna chop more of the regular people’s money too.”
The controversy raises broader questions about transparency regarding the fundraiser’s true purpose. As speculation continues, clarity from Adoma’s team on how the funds will be utilised may be essential to address the mounting concerns.
