Presidential aspirant Hon. Kennedy Ohene Agyapong has outlined an ambitious blueprint to transform Northern Ghana into the nation’s agro-industrial hub. Speaking in Tolon, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) hopeful proposed converting 90 percent of Tamale Airport into a modern cargo terminal, facilitating rapid export of fresh produce to Europe.
He highlighted the region’s geographic advantage, noting that produce could reach London markets within five hours, creating immediate opportunities for farmers. Agyapong also announced plans to establish a fertiliser manufacturing plant across the five northern regions, a critical step toward fully mechanising agriculture.
As part of his initiative, he challenged local leaders to allocate 40,000 acres for a large-scale farming and processing project, promising tangible results regardless of the election outcome. His wider agricultural decentralisation plan includes relocating the Ministry of Food and Agriculture’s headquarters to the North to bring decision-making closer to the country’s agricultural heartland.
The proposal has been well received by residents and youth groups, who see it as a practical solution to unemployment and economic stagnation. Agyapong emphasised that the plan focuses on measurable outcomes and wealth creation for farmers rather than political rhetoric.
