A young Nigerian mother has been arrested just hours after giving birth for confronting her aunt, who allegedly took her newborn to sell.
The shocking case was revealed by a lawyer who had visited a correctional facility to offer free legal aid.
There, he met the 21-year-old woman, who shared her harrowing ordeal.
According to the lawyer, the woman had been expecting a child when tragedy struck—her baby’s father was poisoned and died while she was still pregnant.
A woman in her neighbourhood, whom she referred to as her aunt, offered to care for her. However, things took a dark turn when the aunt later suggested that she sell the unborn child, a proposal the young mother firmly rejected.
On the day she gave birth, the aunt allegedly arranged for the baby to be sold right in front of her.
Once the child was delivered, the aunt took the newborn and left, abandoning the exhausted mother.
Despite being weak and still bleeding from childbirth, the woman later made her way to the aunt’s house to demand her child back.
Instead of helping her, the aunt reported her to the police, leading to her arrest that very night.
The woman was held in a police cell for a week before being transferred to a correctional facility. She has no idea where her baby is or what has happened to the child.
As the story gained traction online, social media users have expressed outrage, condemning the actions of the police and calling for justice.
Many are demanding an investigation into how a mother was jailed while those accused of trafficking her child remain free.
