A young Nigerian man has stirred up controversy after leaving his date stranded with a ₦69,000 bill at a high-end restaurant in Lagos.
The incident, which has gone viral, unfolded when the man, identified as @olayinka.brain on TikTok, invited a woman to dinner, only to leave her and her friend to cover the hefty cost of the meal.
What started as a seemingly normal date took a dramatic turn when, after indulging in an array of expensive dishes and drinks, the man and his friend excused themselves and left without returning.
The two women were left bewildered as time passed, ultimately being forced to settle the entire bill themselves.
The episode quickly spread across social media, where many expressed shock at the man’s behaviour. Following the widespread backlash, he decided to share his version of events on social media.
In his post, the man admitted to leaving the dinner but justified his actions by pointing out several issues that led him to make the decision.
He revealed that he had initially sent the woman ₦10,000 for transport, well above the intended ₦500.
Additionally, he claimed he was unaware that she would bring a friend along, and their combined orders amounted to nearly ₦50,000, while he and his friend had ordered much less.
Feeling the financial pressure, he chose to leave the scene rather than pay the bill.
His explanation has only fueled more discussion, with many debating whether his actions were justified or inappropriate, adding another layer to the viral saga.
“I saw you online and met you; I sent you N10K instead of N500 for transport fare. You didn’t tell me you would come to the date with your friend and I had drank herbs hoping for some fun. We were at the bar, you don’t know my aza balance; you and your friend ordered up to N50K while me and my friend order asun with Hollandia yoghurt and you expect me not to run?”
