Renowned Nigerian preacher, Pastor David Ibiyeomie, has sparked heated debate online after boldly declaring during a recent church service that Jesus Christ “never liked poor people.”
Speaking to his congregation, the founder of Salvation Ministries backed his statement with biblical references, arguing that Jesus only visited the homes of wealthy individuals and deliberately avoided poor people.
“Read your Bible. Jesus never entered the house of a poor man. He visited Lazarus, who was not poor—they gave Him food. He visited Zacchaeus, a rich sinner. So, tell me one poor person Jesus visited. He hates poverty, and by extension, those who remain in it,” Pastor Ibiyeomie asserted.
He further emphasized that believers should not adopt a poverty mindset, stating that Christ’s death was meant to free them from lack.
According to him, while it is acceptable to come to church poor, it is not acceptable to remain in poverty.
The sermon quickly went viral, igniting a firestorm of reactions on social media. Critics accused the pastor of misinterpreting scripture and promoting a prosperity gospel narrative that marginalizes the less privileged.
Many questioned his examples, pointing to biblical instances that contradict his claim.
Despite the backlash, Pastor Ibiyeomie has stood by his comments, continuing to advocate for financial prosperity as a core part of Christian living.
