Controversial U.S.-based Ghanaian political commentator, Kevin Taylor, has raised a storm of concerns with his latest claims regarding the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its alleged plans to undermine the authority of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the revered Asantehene of the Ashanti Region.
Taylor, known for his outspoken and often provocative commentary, has warned that the NPP is scheming to diminish the influence of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II in favour of the Abuakwa chief, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori-Panin.
In a recent statement, Taylor asserted that President Nana Akufo-Addo and his associates, whom he refers to as the “Akyem Mafia,” harbour a deep-seated resentment towards the power wielded by the Asantehene.
He claims that this faction is plotting to elevate Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori-Panin, the chief of Abuakwa, as the most influential ruler in Ghana.
Taylor’s allegations suggest that this plan is set to be enacted if the NPP secures victory in the upcoming 2024 elections and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia assumes the presidency.
Taylor’s accusations extend to the internal dynamics of the NPP, where he points to recent party decisions as evidence of this alleged plot.
Specifically, he highlights the sidelining of Alan Kyerematen in the party’s flagbearer race as indicative of a broader strategy to weaken the party’s Ashanti faction.
According to Taylor, this is part of a deliberate effort to consolidate power among the Akyem group while marginalising influential figures from the Ashanti Region.
Taylor has issued a stern warning to voters in the Ashanti Region, urging them to consider the potential consequences of electing Bawumia and the NPP into office.
He suggests that a victory for Bawumia could result in a systematic effort to diminish the stature of the Asantehene, thereby rendering Otumfuo Osei Tutu II politically insignificant.
Taylor’s claims have stirred significant debate and concern among those who hold the Asantehene in high regard.
As the 2024 election approaches, Taylor’s warning adds a new layer of complexity to the political landscape, potentially influencing voter sentiment and discourse in the Ashanti Region.
The implications of his allegations, if proven true, could have far-reaching consequences for the balance of power in Ghana’s traditional and political spheres.
The NPP and President Akufo-Addo have yet to respond to Taylor’s allegations.
