US-based social media personality Twene Jonas recently found himself in a confrontation with an elderly Ghanaian man who took issue with his outspoken online presentations.
Known for his sharp criticism of Ghanaian political leaders, Jonas frequently addresses the challenges faced by the country, often using harsh language.
This style, however, did not sit well with the elderly man, who approached Jonas to express his concerns.
The man argued that while it was important for Jonas to highlight the issues affecting the country, his approach of hurling insults at leaders was unnecessary.
He suggested that if Jonas insisted on criticising politicians, he should balance his criticism by targeting both the ruling party and the opposition, instead of appearing one-sided.
Jonas, however, did not back down.
He explained that he had previously criticised former President John Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), thereby justifying his current criticism of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.
He maintained that he had the right to call out any government that he felt was failing the people, regardless of the party in power.
In the midst of the back-and-forth, the elderly man accused Jonas of using his platform to insult people for financial gain, implying that he was struggling economically.
In response, Jonas decided to prove his financial success by publicly displaying his bank account balance, showing the man that he was indeed earning well from his ventures.
This incident has further fuelled the ongoing debate about the use of social media platforms to hold leaders accountable, and whether Jonas’ method, which some see as brash, is justified or too extreme.
His supporters argue that his boldness is necessary to draw attention to the pressing issues in Ghana, while critics, like the elderly man, believe a more respectful approach is needed.
