Why I Quit Angel FM – Okatakyie Afrifa

Popular Ghanaian media personality, Okatakyie Afrifa, has publicly declared that President Nana Akufo-Addo is more tolerant of criticism than former President John Dramani Mahama.

Speaking during an interview with Paul Adom Otchere on Metro TV, Okatakyie drew a comparison between the two leaders based on his personal experiences as a journalist.

According to him, despite his consistent and outspoken criticism of the Akufo-Addo administration during its tenure, neither the president nor officials of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) ever confronted or threatened him.

He explained that under Akufo-Addo’s leadership, he enjoyed freedom of expression without interference or backlash, a stark contrast to his encounters during Mahama’s presidency.

According to Okatakyie, things were quite different under Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), revealing that he received threats and unpleasant feedback whenever he publicly criticized the former president or his party.

The situation escalated to a point, he said, where pressure was mounted on his former employer, Dr. Kweku Oteng, following his public criticism of the Mahama-led government.

Okatakyie claimed that the NDC allegedly reached out to Dr. Oteng and threatened that he would be sacked if he continued with his outspokenness.

Fearing humiliation and not wanting to be labeled as someone who was dismissed due to political interference, Okatakyie revealed that he voluntarily resigned from Angel FM when the NDC returned to power.

His revelations have sparked fresh conversations online about press freedom and political tolerance in Ghana, especially in the lead-up to the 2024 elections.
