During the 2026 Budget presentation on November 13, 2025, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson outlined a major push to revive and finish several healthcare projects that were left at various stages under the previous administration. He revealed that the new government, led by John Dramani Mahama, intends to bring ten Agenda 111 hospitals to completion in 2026, marking a renewed effort to clear the backlog of uncompleted medical facilities.
Beyond the Agenda 111 initiative, Dr. Ato Forson detailed a broader plan to wrap up additional health projects that have stalled for years. Facilities such as the La General Hospital, the Effia Nkwanta Hospital in Sekondi-Takoradi, the Komfo Anokye Maternity Block, and the Ashanti Regional Hospital at Sewua were highlighted as part of the priority list expected to move toward completion.
The minister described this renewed attention to abandoned projects as part of a national effort to strengthen trust in the public healthcare system. The goal, he explained, is to boost access, improve infrastructure, and incorporate modern systems that will leave the sector more reliable and resilient.
He also announced that the government will expand the country’s healthcare network by building six new regional hospitals for the newly created regions. Work on three of these new facilities is expected to begin in 2026, alongside two district-level hospitals planned for Bole and Shama.
The rollout forms part of a broader strategy to reduce disparities in healthcare access while modernizing medical services across the country.
