Officials of the University of Ghana were present to unveil the UGCL trophy

The 2026 University of Ghana Corporate Football League (UGCL) was officially launched on January 3, 2026.

The league is scheduled to run from February to June 2026, with 20 teams competing over 19 weeks to crown a single champion.

Speaking at the launch held at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, Vice Chancellor Prof Nana Aba Appiah Amfo emphasised that the UGCL plays a crucial role in academics by strengthening individuals outside the classroom and workplace.

“This year’s edition is about scaling impact. We have listened to feedback from players and spectators and strengthened partnerships. Sport is an essential element of education, featuring discipline, teamwork, leadership, and strategic thinking competencies that classrooms alone cannot fully instill. When colleagues swap boardroom seats for jerseys, they learn to advance workplaces and make us better,” she stated.

Board Chairman of the National Sports Authority, Dr Fred Awaah, who represented the sports minister, commended the organisers and urged them to continue promoting wellness through sports.

“When I launched the first edition in 2025, it was great. But one year on, it is clear that the league has delivered massively. The 2025 edition created friendships across organizations, strengthened professional relationships, and gave corporate workers something to look forward to beyond meetings. UGCL fits into the ministry’s recreation and wellness efforts to make an impact, and more corporate institutions should come on board,” he said.
