The Central Regional Director of Education of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Dr Juliette Dufie Otami, has confirmed that three students have been arrested by the police following the assault of a student during an inter-schools athletics event.

In a video shared by JoyNews, a student from Obrachire SHS was seen being assaulted by individuals in uniform, who threw stones at him multiple times and physically assaulted him.

One individual who attempted to intervene was also attacked, as both suffered beatings in the process.

Inter-Co: GES vows to punish students involved in stabbing and gang rape incidents

Addressing the issue, Dr Juliette Dufie noted that aside from the police investigation, the GES is also probing the incident to ensure the culprits are punished.

“We are cooperating with the police. They have made some arrests as investigations are ongoing. As GES, we have tasked our officers to probe the case and ascertain the facts to also come out with sanctions. Three people have been arrested so far. The teachers are normally at the field, and the footage shows the incident happened outside, so it’s difficult to identify teachers,” she told JoyNews.

However, the Central Regional GES Director indicated that although the arrested individuals claim to be students, her initial checks suggest otherwise, though investigations are still ongoing to confirm their status.

“It’s difficult to ascertain whether all those around were students. For now, they claim they are students. There are other footages showing people in uniform but my findings, though premature, suggest that they are not students,” she added.

This incident adds to the growing cases of hooliganism in the 2026 inter-schools competitions across the country, as the GES works to curtail the menace.
