32 gold and silver objects stolen from Asantehene 150 years ago return to Ghana

According to a statement issued by the Chief Negotiator on behalf of the Manhyia Palace, on April 9, 2024, fifteen (15) gold and silver pieces from the British Museum and seventeen (17) from the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) simultaneously arrived in the nation after 150 years.

During the Sagrenti War in 1874, the British looted antiquities from the Palace of Asantehene Kofi Karikari in Kumasi.

On a long-term loan, meaning an initial three-year loan renewable for an additional three, the royal artifacts are returned.

The statement stated that these would be installed at the Manhyia Museum along with the seven pieces from the Fowler Museum.

Additionally, the Museum will close in order to install the artifacts, and then reopen on May 1.
