Four people have been confirmed dead, with 19 others injured, following a fatal road crash on the Buipe–Tamale highway at Sawaba No. 2 on Tuesday, March 31, 2026.
The accident involved a Sprinter Benz bus with registration number AS 9332-17, which was travelling from Buipe towards Kumasi, and a trailer truck that reportedly fled the scene after the collision.
According to the Ghana National Fire Service, personnel from the Buipe Fire Command responded swiftly to the distress call. By the time firefighters arrived, 19 passengers had already been rescued and transported to the Buipe Government Hospital for treatment.
Fire officers proceeded to extricate three passengers who were trapped in the wreckage of the minibus.
Four victims — two males and two females — lost their lives in the crash. Three died on the spot, while one succumbed to injuries at the hospital. The bodies of the deceased were handed over to the police for preservation and further investigations.
The Sprinter bus sustained extensive damage, with preliminary findings indicating that the trailer truck caused the crash before fleeing the scene.
The GNFS credited the swift response of its team, led by Station Officer II Abubakar M. Sheriff, for helping to prevent further casualties and ensuring that survivors received prompt medical attention.
Police have since launched investigations into the incident and are working to track down the driver of the trailer truck involved in the hit-and-run.
