5 arrested for open defecation at Osu Cemetery

Five individuals have been arrested and arraigned before the James Town District Court for open defecation at the Osu Cemetery, as authorities intensify enforcement of sanitation by-laws within the Korle Klottey Municipality.

The arrests were carried out by the Environmental Health and Sanitation Unit of the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly (KoKMA) as part of efforts to address insanitary practices in public spaces, particularly in sensitive areas such as cemeteries.

At their court appearance, two of the accused persons pleaded guilty and were each fined GH¢1,200.

Two others initially pleaded guilty with explanation; however, their pleas were changed to not guilty.

They were granted bail in the sum of GH¢3,000 each with two sureties and are expected to reappear before the court on March 30, 2026.

The fifth accused person pleaded not guilty and was also granted bail of GH¢3,000 with two sureties, to reappear on the same date.

The case was presided over by Her Worship Anna Akosua Appiah Gottfried Anaafi Gyafi.

The Assembly has reiterated its commitment to prosecuting sanitation offenders as part of broader measures to maintain cleanliness and protect public health in the municipality.

Residents have been reminded to use designated sanitation facilities at all times, with a warning that further violations will attract legal consequences.
