A 62-year-old self-styled businesswoman, Nana Ama Nwarueze, popularly known as Ohemaa, has been remanded once again by the Madina District Court in connection with a $13,000 fraud case.
The accused, who is facing charges of defrauding another businesswoman under false pretenses, had her bail application rejected after the court determined there was insufficient assurance that she would stand trial if granted bail.
Presiding over the case, Judge Abena Asoh Owusu-Omenyo ordered a further investigation into the accused’s background, particularly because the prosecution had highlighted concerns about Nwarueze’s lack of a fixed residence.
This decision comes after Nwarueze allegedly misled the complainant, Dorothy Asare, with false claims of being a business mogul owning high-value properties, including Ohemaa Plaza at East Legon, fishing vessels in Takoradi, and a residence at Airport Residential Area.
According to the prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Apewa Achana, Nwarueze presented herself as a successful businesswoman with significant investments, even claiming to have over 10 containers of goods at the Tema port.
She promised the complainant that a $5,000 payment would help clear the containers, with a promise of repayment within three weeks. However, when the complainant grew suspicious and pressed for repayment, Nwarueze demanded an additional $8,000 for a supposed issue at the port.
After the complainant handed over the requested sum, Nwarueze failed to return the money, and further investigation revealed that the properties she claimed to own were nonexistent, and she had disappeared from her supposed Airport residence.
Nwarueze has pleaded not guilty to the charges but remains in custody as the investigation continues.
