Authorities in Utah have revealed that a 71-year-old man, George Zinn, attempted to mislead police after the fatal shooting of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk by falsely claiming responsibility for the attack.

Zinn, who was initially detained and later released, admitted to law enforcement that he shouted he was the shooter in order to allow the actual suspect, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, a chance to flee. Court filings indicate Zinn yelled statements such as “I shot him—now shoot me” and refused to disclose the location of the weapon.

Sheriff Michael Smith clarified that Zinn’s actions obstructed the investigation but that there is no evidence linking him to Robinson prior to the shooting. Zinn now faces charges including obstruction of justice and possession of child sexual abuse material, after authorities discovered over 20 illicit images of minors in his possession. A judge ruled that he remains in custody without bail, describing him as a significant threat to public safety.

Meanwhile, Robinson, the primary suspect in Kirk’s death, has been charged with seven counts including aggravated murder. Kirk, a high-profile conservative activist and ally of former President Donald Trump, was shot while hosting an event at Utah Valley University on September 10. His killing has been labeled a targeted attack, drawing national attention.

Zinn has a history of disruptive behavior at public events in Salt Lake City and minor criminal offenses, including a 2013 arrest for sending threatening communications related to the Salt Lake City Marathon.
