A devastating accident on the Kintampo-Tamale highway has claimed the lives of at least 8 people, with 27 others fighting for their lives in critical condition.
The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of today, at 3am, involving a bus (GS-2564-20) carrying passengers to Widaana in the Pusiga District of the Upper East Region, and a truck (GR-4958-K) laden with tomatoes heading towards Kumasi.
According to eyewitnesses, the bus had been attempting to overtake two vehicles when it strayed from its lane and collided head-on with the oncoming truck. The impact was catastrophic, leaving a trail of destruction and chaos.
“The bus was trying to overtake two vehicles, but it seems the driver lost control and veered into the oncoming truck,” said the bus driver’s mate.
Kintampo North Municipal Fire officer, DOII Dominic Twum, confirmed the incident and stated that rescue efforts were underway.
The MCE for Kintampo North, Mr. Isaac Donkor, expressed shock and sadness over the incident, calling for improved road safety measures.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as “horrific” and “devastating”, with mangled wreckage and injured victims scattered across the road.
This accident highlights the deplorable state of the Kintampo-Tamale highway, notorious for its potholes and hazardous conditions. Residents and travelers have long called for urgent repairs and maintenance to prevent such tragedies.
The Pusiga District is in mourning, as families await news of their loved ones. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety and responsible driving.
