Kwesi Pratt Fires Back at US Tariffs

Ghanaian journalist and political commentator Kwesi Pratt Jnr. has responded to the recent 10% tariff imposed on Ghanaian exports by the United States, slamming the argument that Ghana is too weak to retaliate.

In a statement shared on his social media account on April 9, 2025, Pratt rejected claims that Ghana is unable to act in response to the U.S. decision.

He criticized the idea, asserting that such an argument was fundamentally flawed.

The U.S. government, under President Donald Trump, recently imposed a sweeping 10% tariff on imports from several countries, including Ghana.

This move has sparked concern within Ghana’s exporting community and among policymakers, who worry it could hurt the nation’s economy.

Pratt stated that negotiations should be based on mutual exchange, and if Ghana were to remain passive in the face of such tariffs, it would be seen not as negotiation but as submission.

He pointed out that Ghana holds several significant cards in international diplomacy.

The journalist emphasized Ghana’s membership in influential global organizations, such as ECOWAS, the African Union (AU), and the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).

Pratt also reminded the public that Ghana is home to a U.S. military base, which has drawn interest from NATO for potential future military installations, including a drone base.

He also underscored the strategic importance of Ghana’s resources, such as gold, lithium, oil, and gas, which provide the country with considerable leverage in global discussions.

Pratt made it clear that Ghana’s position is far stronger than those who view it through a colonial lens would like to believe.
