A Nigerian woman has been apprehended by the police following her refusal to return ₦800,000 that was mistakenly deposited into her bank account. The money, which was meant as an Ajo contribution from another individual, was erroneously transferred into her GTBank account instead of the intended recipient’s Union Bank account.
The case surfaced on social media after the rightful owner of the funds, identified as @ii_kach on X (formerly Twitter), took to the platform to explain the troubling situation. Initially, she shared her predicament, pleading for assistance after the accidental transfer was made and the recipient failed to return the money.
In a recent update, @ii_kach revealed that the woman had been located and arrested by law enforcement officials. During questioning, the suspect admitted to having spent the entire sum on purchasing fabrics to stock her business, stating that she no longer had any of the money left.
The woman further disclosed that on the day the accidental transfer took place, she was also expecting an incoming payment of ₦1 million from another source. This detail came to light as part of the police inquiry.
Following the arrest, it was reported that the suspect’s brother intervened by depositing ₦300,000 toward repayment of the lost funds. He has pledged to refund the full ₦800,000 before the end of June, according to updates shared by @ii_kach.
Before law enforcement’s involvement, the victim expressed her distress publicly, explaining that she had reported the issue to Union Bank and requested that GTBank restrict transactions on the recipient’s account to prevent withdrawal of the mistakenly transferred funds. However, despite these measures, the woman managed to move the money from her account.
One of the victim’s earlier posts read: “The lady has finished the ₦800,000… I’m finished. Ajo contribution money is gone,” underscoring the emotional and financial impact of the situation.
The police intervention and ongoing efforts to recover the funds underscore the difficulties faced by victims of mistaken transfers in digital banking environments. This incident also highlights the legal consequences that can arise when a recipient refuses to return money that does not belong to them.
