Toyota Hiace Overtake Ends in Disaster—One Killed, Nine Rescued from Wreck

A deadly crash on the Cape Coast–Takoradi Highway near Elmina has claimed the life of one passenger and left nine others injured, according to a report released by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) on Friday, May 30, 2025.

The accident involved a Toyota Hiace minibus, registered GR 1464-18, and a Zonda truck, registered GN 4197-21. Emergency services rushed to the scene after a distress call was placed, with personnel from the University of Cape Coast (UCC) Fire Station arriving promptly. The rescue team, led by ADO I Halm, secured the crash site and managed traffic while awaiting reinforcements from the GNFS Regional Headquarters.

Under the supervision of Regional Fire Commander ACFO II Merinder Mary Attiga-Mensah, firefighters successfully extricated nine people who were trapped inside the wrecked minibus. The survivors were quickly handed over to the National Ambulance Service and taken to UCC Hospital for medical care.

Tragically, one person was found unresponsive inside the vehicle and was later pronounced dead. The driver of the Toyota Hiace, despite causing the crash, suffered only minor injuries.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the collision was a result of wrongful overtaking by the Hiace driver. The minibus sustained severe damage, while the truck involved was less affected.

In response to the incident, the GNFS issued a strong reminder to all motorists to practice safe driving and avoid reckless overtaking in order to prevent such avoidable tragedies on the road.

The details were confirmed in an official statement from the Central Regional Public Relations Office of the Ghana National Fire Service.
