The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has made a passionate call to Africans in the diaspora, urging them to return home and contribute their skills and knowledge to drive the continent’s development forward.
Speaking during a meeting with Council members from the US state of Savannah on July 16, 2025, the King drew parallels between Africa’s colonial past and its current state of dependency on foreign powers. According to him, while slavery and colonial rule may have formally ended, Africa still finds itself bound by economic systems that heavily favour the West.
He pointed out that the continent continues to export raw materials only to import finished goods at a much higher cost, a practice that leaves African economies underdeveloped and reliant. Despite the abundance of natural resources, Africa’s limited technical capacity, especially in extractive industries, means that the real value from these resources is captured abroad.
Otumfuo stressed that while Africa remains economically tethered to Western interests, the continent is not without solutions. One of those, he noted, lies in mobilizing the intellectual and professional expertise of Africans living abroad.
He called on members of the diaspora to return home, stating that their contributions are essential for building a sustainable and self-reliant Africa. He also assured them of a warm welcome and strong support, particularly within the Ashanti Kingdom.
The King emphasized that his doors are open to all who wish to reconnect with their heritage and be part of Africa’s transformation. He made it clear that the Kingdom of Ashanti would provide the necessary environment and support for returning diaspora Africans who are ready to help rebuild the continent.
To reinforce his commitment, Otumfuo even set aside traditional protocol to meet with the visiting delegation, a gesture he said reflected the deep importance he places on the diaspora’s role in shaping Africa’s future.
