Fear has once again gripped Kumasi’s Asawase constituency after another man was shot and killed in broad daylight, marking the second such fatal attack in less than a week. The latest killing occurred at Sabon Zongo on Friday, not far from the premises of OTEC FM.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the assailants, riding a motorbike, ambushed the yet-to-be-identified man just as he approached his parked vehicle. Without warning, they opened fire and fled the scene, leaving the victim motionless.
This chilling attack comes days after a similar gun-related killing occurred at Asawase F-Line on July 22, when unknown gunmen invaded the residence of Abdul-Malik Azenba, the Kusasi chief of the Ashanti region. He was fatally shot with an AK-47 rifle, making the use of high-powered weaponry a common thread in both incidents.
The criminals in both attacks used motorbikes and military-grade assault rifles, according to police investigators. Spent bullet casings recovered from the latest crime scene have confirmed that an AK-47 was once again used in the execution.
As of the time of this report, the identity of Friday’s victim remained unknown, and the body had yet to be moved to the morgue. Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has launched a full-scale manhunt to track down those responsible, but no arrests have been made.
The two back-to-back killings have ignited widespread panic among locals in Asawase and surrounding communities. In response, heavily armed police personnel have been deployed throughout the area in an attempt to restore calm and tighten security.
The mystery behind the motive and identity of the killers continues to deepen, as residents anxiously await answers and reassurance.
