Head of Ghana School of Law to Step Down August 31 – Successor Yet to Be Named

Justice Nana Barima Yaw Kodie Oppong, the Director of Legal Education and leader of the Ghana School of Law, will leave office on Sunday, August 31, 2025, bringing his three-year tenure to an early close.

Students were informed of his decision on Tuesday, August 12, with the outgoing director reflecting on his time in charge and expressing hopes for the continued success of both current and incoming cohorts. He encouraged Part II students to aim for their Call to the Bar in October and urged Part I students to persist through the challenges of legal training.

Justice Oppong, who also serves as the Manwerehene of Akyem Abuakwa, assumed the role in December 2022, following the retirement of Kwasi Prempeh-Eck. A respected solicitor of the Supreme Court of Ghana, lecturer, and managing partner at Ampofo, Oppong & Associates, he brought both academic and practical expertise to the position. He is also the author of Contemporary Trends in the Law of Immovable Property in Ghana.

His leadership saw the implementation of academic reforms, improved administrative processes, and an emphasis on discipline and excellence within the institution. However, his term coincided with a turbulent phase in Ghana’s legal education sector, including the Attorney General’s push to replace the centralized law school admission process with a national bar examination system—a move Justice Oppong publicly questioned.

The Ghana Legal Council has yet to name his successor, but Justice Oppong has urged students and staff to extend their full cooperation to the incoming leadership to ensure a smooth transition.
